Creating Metrics

Created by Lluis Mather, Modified on Thu, 5 Nov at 5:06 AM by Lluis Mather

A metric is a number your dashboards display: a count or a percentage. Metrics are built from audiences and from tracker answers. They power KPI tiles, charts and leaderboards.

Library metrics and dashboard metrics

Library metric

Dashboard metric

Where you make it

Admin › Build › Metrics › New

Inside the builder: Compose step › left panel › Metrics

Who can use it

Every dashboard

Only the dashboard it was made in

Use it for

Figures shared across dashboards, like Members

One-off figures for a single dashboard

Every workspace starts with one library metric: Members (a count of All members).

Metric formats

Format

What it shows

Example

Count

How many members are in an audience, or how many workplaces have one

Reps; Workplaces with a rep

% of everyone

The audience as a share of the dashboard's base audience

Turnout = Voted as % of members

% of another audience

The audience as a share of a second audience you choose

Trained reps as % of Reps

Workplaces over a threshold

How many workplaces have the audience above (or below) a share you set

Workplaces below 50% turnout

Sum of an attribute

Total of a number across workplaces (or branches/employers) in scope

Total attendance at members' meetings

Average of an attribute

Mean of a number

Average offer (%)

Median of an attribute

Middle value of a number

Median teacher pay

Most common value

The value that appears most

Most common outcome

% with an answer (coverage)

Share of workplaces or areas with a value; can be limited to recent answers

Employers with a pay round return; Schools answered in the last 30 days

Create a metric

  1. Open Metrics › New (library) or the builder's Metrics panel › New metric (dashboard).
  2. Enter a name.
  3. Choose the format and the audience(s) or attribute it's built from.
  4. For tracker metrics made inside a dashboard, you can set Only recent answers (for example 30 days). This option isn't offered on library metrics.
  5. Save. Audiences are shown by name.

Rules

  • Renaming a metric updates it on every dashboard that uses it, with no need to edit them.
  • A metric in use can't be deleted. The message tells you how many dashboards use it. Remove it from those blocks first.
  • The Builder assistant can't remove a metric while a block uses it, either.

Troubleshooting metrics

Problem

Why

Fix

Tile shows a dash or 0

The audience is empty, the attribute has no values yet, or filters exclude everything

Check the audience's count; clear filters; run Check dashboard in the builder or ask the assistant to check it

Percentage looks wrong

It's measured against the dashboard's base audience, not the one you expected

Use % of another audience and pick the right one

Figures differ between two people

Each person sees their own area

Expected

"Only recent answers" isn't offered

It's only on metrics made inside a dashboard

Create the metric in the builder's Metrics panel

Can't delete a metric

A block still uses it

Remove or change the block first

A choice question can't be averaged

Choices can't be totalled

Use Most common value or a count of an audience built on the answer

A count of "members without a rep" equals "members with a rep"

The metric points at the wrong audience

Check each metric's audience in the Metrics panel
