Step 1: Make sure the audiences exist.
Each number comes from an audience. In Admin › Build › Audiences, check that you have the created or uploaded the audience you want to use for your dashboard. The default All Members should already be there as a baseline.
Step 2: Create the dashboard
- Go to Admin › Build › Builder and click New.
- Title: Add title.
- Description: one line describing the information in the dashboard.
- Template: choose Blank.
- Cover image (optional): upload a PNG or JPG. It appears on the dashboard's card. SVG files aren't accepted.
- Who can see this: choose Chosen roles and tick National, Region and District. Admins can always see it.
- Leave Status as Draft. All changes are to be made in the Draft stage. Once ready, it can be published and will then be Active and there is the option to Pin the Dashboard for emphasis. Nobody but admins can see a draft.
- Click Next: base audience. The builder opens.
Across the top you'll see the five steps: Details, Universe, Audiences, Compose and Filters. You can jump between them at any time and your work saves automatically.
Step 3: Choose the audience
The base audience is "everyone" for a dashboard: every percentage is measured against it, and filters narrow it.
- Choose All Members or click the drop down arrow on the right next to All Members to choose another option.
Step 4: Pin the audiences you'll use
In the Audiences step, click on the Audiences appearing in the left hand column you would like to include. They then appear in the right hand side under Used in Dashboard.
Step 5: Create the metrics
Go to Compose. In the left panel, in the Block Library, you can move between Blocks and Metrics.
Click on Metric to compose one or several to be used in the dashboard and then apply it to these components. Each metric shows a figure in the panel once saved. Name, select the audience required, aggregation (what to count - workplaces or members), select format required and then click Create Metric in the bottom right.
Step 6: Compose
Build the page top to bottom, in sections. A section is a Container with a Header inside; put the content blocks in the container too. Drag blocks from the left panel onto the canvas, then click a block to edit its settings in the right hand side Inspector panel.
Example A: Introduction
- Add a Container.
- Inside it, add a Header.
- Add a Text block below the header: two or three lines on what the dashboard shows, where the data comes from and when it was last updated. Text supports bold, lists and links. Tick collapsible if you want readers to be able to hide it.
Example B: Content of Dashboard
- Add components you want to see in the Dashboard. You can do this by dragging it from the left hand Block Library to the middle where a new section will automatically make room for it. Alternatively, you can click on +Add a Section in the middle down the bottom. A Container will appear. You can then drag your chosen component into the Container.
- Add a KPI grid with whatever tiles you would like to see. Add a sub-label to any tile that needs explaining, e.g. of members balloted.
To reorder anything, drag it. To move a block into or out of a container, drag it over the container. Refresh at any time; the order is kept.
Step 7: Filters
Go to the Filters step. This is where you choose the filters that can be used to analyse the Dashboard. Every new dashboard already has a Members filter.
Each yes/no filter can be set to Include or Exclude. Each filter can only be added once.
Officers only see areas inside their own patch in these filters, so there's no need to make separate dashboards per region.
Step 8: Publish
- Click Publish and choose:
- Pinned — appears as a card on everyone's Home. Use for the one or two dashboards people need daily.
- Active — listed under Dashboards.
- The dashboard is live, and users who can see it get a notice under Notifications.
- To reverse the Publication, go to the Dashboard Homepage. Find the Dashboard required. Then click the 3 dots in the top right hand corner of the tile and click Draft. It will revert to a Draft. Drafts can then be deleted.
- If you wish to retire a Dashboard, click on the three dots in the top right hand corner and select Archive. It then keeps the Dashboard but takes it off the Active Dashboards that are available to be accessed.
- You can always toggle between these stages.
Step 9: Views
- Views are filtered versions of Dashboards.
- You can select filters required to extract certain information. Should you wish to save this, click on Save as View in the top right.
- You can select to save the view as either Private View or a View Pinned to Dashboard.
Troubleshooting the builder
Problem | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
A block shows a placeholder or dash | Its metric's audience is empty or the attribute has no values | Check the metric and audience; check the dashboard for problems |
Timeline says it needs history | It records from the day it's added | Leave it; it fills over the following days |
Map shows a list instead | No map shape exists for your areas | Expected; use a bar chart or leaderboard |
A change didn't save | You moved on before Saved appeared, or the title was blank | Wait for Saved; a blank title shows an error |
A block landed in the wrong place | Dropped into a container by mistake | Drag it out; order is kept on refresh |
An attribute isn't offered for a table column | No workplace has that value yet, or it belongs to employers/branches | Check the tracker has answers; employer and branch answers are grouped separately |
Two columns with the same name | A tracker was duplicated without renaming | Rename the copy |
Cover image refused | SVG isn't accepted | Use PNG or JPG |
Officers can't find the dashboard | Still a draft, archived, or not shared with their role | Publish it and check Who can see this |
Changing a live dashboard | Changes show to everyone at once | Duplicate it, edit the copy, then swap |
A filter key is refused | It already exists | Each filter can be added once |
